Chaunsa aka Samar-e-Bahisht of mangoes. Persian name Samar-e-Bahisht literally translates into fruit of heaven and that’s what Chausa was called during medieval times.
It is said when Sher Shah Suri won against Humanyun in the town of Chaunsa near Patna in 1539, he decided to commemorate the victory by naming his favourite mango as Chaunsa. Contrary to the popular belief, Chaunsa is not a ‘sucking type’ mango and is a perfect table mango with rich aroma, sweet taste and juicy pulp that turns into pleasant yellow color when ripe.
What’s the stand-out feature of Chaunsa? It is amongst the most nutritious mango cultivars with higher Vitamin C content vs. all other mango variants. Chaunsa is also called Ghazipuria as it was the most popular cultivation near Ghazipur in its early days.
