In North India, we call it Safeda and where it comes from it called Banganpalli. This mango that’s most widely grown in Andhra and Telangana and was the first mango variety to bag the coveted geographical indication tag. It is said to occupy 70% of the total area under mango cultivation in these states. Safeda aka Banganpalli is a large mango variety which weighs 350g to 800g apiece with thick peel and 100% fibre-free sweet pulp making it a favorite for preparing milkshakes. The pull down – it is a pain to ripen as it takes the most time amongst all mangoes that we have on offer. But once they ripen, they’re a treat especially if you want to cut slices and scoop the pulp. True to their ripening process, these mangoes mature late too with optimum sweetness developing only after May 15 and thus, these will be late entrants to our Sanesa Mango Festival. Fun Fact: There is a town with the same name, Banganpalli in Nandyal district of Andhra from which the mango got its name. Banganpalli was the capital of princely state Banganpalle between 1790 and 1948.
